Chord Chart for "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me"

I've heard several people ask for the chord chart to "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me," so I asked Adam to send it to us for the blog. Adam Seate wrote the music to this old hymn (originally published by Edward Hopper in 1871) for ACS in 2002, but since then it's been picked up by groups and churches all over North Carolina and beyond! If you want to hear what the OLD hymn version (not Adam's version) sounds like, check out this link! Personally I prefer the new version!! If you're not sure how the tune goes for Adam's version, check out the last few minutes of the Pilgrimage video.

ACS '07 Bonus Video - "The Kamel Ransom Video"

Friday afternoon Hutch announced that he had received a ransom video for the Kissing Kamel who was pronounced camel-napped on Thursday night at the Talent Show. The sock puppet was a suspicious suspect, since the Kamel had stolen his comedy bit, but who actually did it and will Hutch get his Kamel back?

ACS 2007 - TUESDAY VIDEO REWIND

A bit shorter today, this was so that Timm Hackett had time "interrupt" the Woo Wednesday segment with his definitive teaching session of what proper "woo" really is. In case you can't tell, all of the clips from the video are shown in reverse, in backwards order from the events of the day.

IN YOUR FACE v2.0 "Rock Scream Tuesday"

Bryan Pack has done a marvelous job this week with our daily "theme" videos. The first one he brought us was "Rock Scream Tuesday" which is really pretty self-explanatory.

ACS 2007 - MONDAY VIDEO REWIND

Okay, so the videos had a little trouble compressing down to a reasonable web-friendly size last night. I wanted to post them in QuickTime format, but ended up forced to use Windows Media Video (.wmv) format. But this version above is Flash Video, so everyone should be able to see it. I'll try to add iPod-friendly files as soon as I can get QT Pro to cooperate.

Monday's Rewind turned out to be pretty long, but there was a lot that happened on Day One of ACS 2007! Features scenes from Registration, Orientation, Worship, 1st Annual Game Night and more.

Well I guess we're actually about halfway through the week already! How time flies when you're learning to "woo"...

Well anyway, the first videos will be online later tonight. Please feel free to leave comments and let us know what you thought of them! :-)

I better hurry or I'll be late for the dance!

There really IS a Rock, Paper, Scissors Tourny!

Okay, I just couldn't resist posting this when I saw it a few minutes ago! This summer at ACS we created a hilarious video clip for the "In Your Face" series called "The 55th Annual American Association of Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament of ACS" sponsored by "ESPN 8, The Ocho." To watch the video clip, click here.

Well apparently it turns out that our farce wasn't that far from reality... according to this news story published today from Reuters entitled Hundreds to compete for rock, paper, scissors title, "Top players from around the globe will gather in Toronto this weekend to compete for a C$10,000 ($8,840) prize and the title of world champion." It continues, "Players smack their fists into their palms and count to three before making one of three hand signals: a fist (rock), flat hand (paper) or two fingers (scissors)." There's even a World RPS (Rock Paper Scissors) Society Web page at www.worldrps.com!

Who knew?! Maybe next year we'll have to send our A.A.R.P.S. of ACS champion on to the next level... yet is World RPS Society ready for our "secret play" which won the tournament this past summer? :-) Watch the video here.

See you at Pilgrimage this weekend!!!

Pilgrimage Promo Video!

Check it out... it's a promo video I did for the NCCUMC Youth Event called "Pilgrimage." Please leave your comments! This version is in Flash video format and is pretty low-resolution, so you shouldn't have much trouble viewing it.

If you would like to download a higher-quality version to show to your youth group, please visit http://goldentwig.blip.tv/file/88936/ for 10 additional viewing formats (Windows Media Player, QuickTime & Real Player) and different sizes (iPod-ready, full screen, etc.). I've also just added a MPEG-1 file that will work with MediaShout. Please leave a comment if you encounter any problems!

NC Conference UMYF "Camp Song Sing Along"

Passed onto me from Facebook (Holly didn't write this):
For those of you who didnt get Jimmy Crayton's email... they are trying to get a new conference event up and going called "Camp Song Sing Along." Basically the idea is for youth and staff from the NC Conference UMYF to come together for an afternoon of singing and fellowship. We will be singing all your favorite camp songs. We will also incorporate scripture and a message. It is going to be held at Edenton St. UMC in Raleigh on September 23rd, from 4-7 pm. Music will be led by Adam Seate and Jay Locklear among others. Snacks will be provided. Now I'm sure you are wondering about cost... Very cheap. We are asking that you bring either a box of cereal, or a plastic jar of peanut butter. These will be donated to the Food Bank of NC. We will also be taking up a love offering for YSF. There is also the possibility of having T-Shirts made. What I need you to do is to pass this word along to your pastors and youth leaders and everyone in your youth group. Have someone contact "camp_song_sing_a_long(at)yahoo(dot)com" to let them know if your group is interested and how many you think might come.

ACS 2006 - Completing the Equation

To finish out the week, I'm including the rest of Allen Bingham's sermon notes... just to "complete the equation" as he called it. (Remember our week's theme was Chemistry!) I didn't want this post to be so incredibly long, so instead of including the entire version of each prayer we used during the week, I've included a synopsis and a link to the rest of it online elsewhere. So when you find yourself looking for unique material for Youth Sunday at your church, remember this list and come back here!

SATURDAY - COMPLETING THE EQUATION

  • Rule of JOY – Jesus, Others, Yourself
  • We are a gift (taken, blessed, and broken by Jesus) for the world.
  • CHARGE: the Great Commandment and the Great Commission
  • CHARGE: Love God - Love Neighbor - Go - Baptize - Teach

The Fellowship of the Unashamed – Dr. Bob Moorehead
I am a part of the fellowship of the Unashamed. I have the Holy Spirit Power.
The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made.
I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. I won't look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.
My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure.
I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, chintzy giving, and dwarfed goals.

A Magna Charta of Trust of an Out-of-Control Disciple – Leonard I. Sweet
I am part of the Church of the Out-of-Control.
I once was a control junkie, but now I am an Out-of-Control Disciple.
I've given up my control to God. I trust and obey the Spirit.
I've jumped off the fence, I've stepped over the line, and I’ve pulled out all the stops.
There's no turning back, looking around, slowing down, backing away, letting up, or shutting up.
Its life Against the Odds, Outside the Box, Over the Wall,

I am not here to please the dominant culture. I live to please my Lord and Savior.

The Jesus Creed – Brian McLaren
We have confidence in Jesus
Who healed the sick, the blind, and the paralyzed.
And even raised the dead.
He cast out evil powers and
Confronted corrupt leaders.
He cleansed the temple.
He favored the poor.
He turned water into wine,
Walked on water, calmed storms.
He died for the sins of the world,
Rose from the dead, and ascended to the Father... (

A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition – The United Methodist Hymnal
I am no longer my own, but thine.

St. Patrick’s Breastplate (adapted)
I arise today
through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
through the belief in the threeness,
through confession of the oneness
of the Creator of Creation.
I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with his baptism,
Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength of his descent for the judgment of Doom.
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.
I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness,
Of the Creator of Creation.

THURSDAY - Truth and Consequences - "I love you, but …"
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - A time for everything...
• A death-fearing culture is in conflict with a God-breathed life.
• Believing in eternity sets me on one path, carpe diem leads me down another.
• Neo's riff on "Death" in A New Kind of Christian: A Tale of Two Friends on a Spiritual Journey (pp. 85-93, especially p. 87)
• Living out of story # 1 (the universe was banged into existence for no apparent reason and with no apparent purpose. Someday it will end and there will be no one left to remember it ever existed. In the meantime, we live and die. And that’s about it.)

o First, I am aware that I will die. What’s the consequence of that?
o I try to cram all the best experiences into this one lifespan and am frustrated when I have to wait for things. What’s the consequence of that?
o Then I am not willing to explore those pleasures and virtues that require discipline and difficulty. What’s the consequence of that?
o I become frustrated, always disappointed, always worrying if this moment of happiness will last. What’s the consequence of that?
o Well, if I am the only one living this way it's bad, but compound the problem with others living the same way and … What’s the consequence of that?
o It’s all meaningless in the end … death wipes it all away … who cares … whatever …

• Living out of story #2 (a Creator designs a universe to produce life. The Creator cares about everything and everyone – including you and me! God desires for each one of us to enter into a living relationship of trust. When we die, we enter the Creator's presence so that in some sense our life now is a prelude to another dimension of life that never dies.)

o First, I am aware that I will die. What’s the consequence of that?
o I realize I should focus on things that have significance for this life AND the life to come. What’s the consequence of that?
o I am able to slow down and wallow in this life's joys – to truly savor the God moments, rather than rush to cram another one in. What’s the consequence of that?
o I receive every gift, large or small, as a gift from God and a preview of heaven. What’s the consequence of that?
o I see life's hardships as character-building moments and opportunities to strengthen my soul. What’s the consequence of that?
o I feel the trials of this life are not worth comparing to the glories yet to be revealed. What’s the consequence of that?
o I feel a confidence that allows me to face every trial (even death) with freedom from worry. What’s the consequence of that?
o I do not live in a hurry, but treasure every moment. What’s the consequence of that?
o I live the full life, the abundant life, the joy filled life. What’s the consequence of that?
o When I live this way and you join me in living this way, then the world becomes a different kind of place. What’s the consequence of that?
o Then life is lived in the midst of God's soon-coming and already-here kingdom.

WEDNESDAY - Elements of Life - Ten Commandments ==> the get-to-do vs. - the got-to-do

Scripture:
Matthew 5:3-12 - The Beatitudes
Galatians 5:22-23 - Fruit of the Spirit ... "there is no law against these.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a - Love is ...
"Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends."
Philippians 4:8 - ... meditate on these things.
"Beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
Colossians 3:12-17 - Clothe yourself with ...
"As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Day One!

I'm going to list the scripture references and topics that we talked about each day, as well as the music I used in the videos. Click on the links after each song to find the music on iTunes and/or go buy the CD.

Theme of the Week: Chemistry
Bonds, reactions, equilibriums...science is a part of life. Whether in our bonds with others, our reactions to the world, or the elements in our personal life, we are all part of an equation whose answer is God. Christ is the catalyst and helps bring us closer to God and one another.

Theme Scripture: Ephesians 2:12-14
"Remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.  But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.  For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us."

Monday's Theme: Fill the Void
Scripture:
Psalm 139 - We are fearfully and wonderfully made
Psalm 63 - We thirst for God
John 4:1-30 - The Woman at the Well ==> looking for love in all the wrong places
Mark 14:3-9 - The Woman Anointing Jesus at Bethany ==> what she has done will be told in memory of her.

I think this one is pretty self-explantory.... Although I do have to apologize on behalf of myself and Epiphany... I know there were more females in Weaver who probably would have wanted to say something in this video. We started filming it long after the serenade at about 1:45 am in the morning. By the time we got done with the boys and realized the 2nd girls dorm didn't know anything about it, we had no idea how to wake anybody up to join us.

So if you didn't get a chance to participate in this video and are graduating, feel free to use the Comments area below to leave the rest of us a message! :-)

ACS 2006 "In Your Face! - The Chinnagins Go to ACS" (Thursday)

The Chinnagins Go to ACS

Okay this video was also a blast to make! After laughing so hard during Wednesday's spaghetti filming, I decided a tripod would be a safer bet for this one. And it's a good thing too... almost every shot ended with us cracking up! Maybe if I find some free time, I can edit a blooper reel with all of the outtakes from the week!
Anyway, I saw this "chinnagins" idea about 12 years ago when I was a youth and I thought it would be pretty funny for us to use this week. The hard part was that we only had about an hour to set up and film it (although we went 90 minutes and ended up all missing dinner!) We weren't exactly prepared with the props though and in the first few shots, the "hair" wasn't attached with anything... thus the female camper's comment, "Oh no, my hair is going away!" Many thanks to our wonderful performers, Holden, Jordan, Ken, Greg, Will and Chris!

This is the first video in a series of daily videos shot, produced and edited during a week-long United Methodist Youth camp called "ACS."

Be sure to leave comments after you watch each video! I want to hear what you thought of them! :-)

2006 ACS Videos are In Your FACE!

Okay the videos are on their way. After catching up on my sleep last night (I got 12.5 hours in 5 nights at ACS and 11 hours in just one night yesterday!), I'm a little more coherent today! But you know what? You guys are all worth every minute of it! I'd do it again in a heartbeat... and will next summer!! :-) This was the best ACS I can remember since the ones when I was a youth.

So in the meantime while I'm deciding on which video-hosting service is the best one for me to use for this, you have a blog entry here on which you can post comments. If you have a page with photos from ACS, feel free to send me the link (by email which is listed on your address list) and I'll add it the sidebar here. Just make sure you put ACS 2006 or something in the subject line.

In Your Face!!! (ACS 2005)

So I might be the slowest person ever, but the videos from ACS are finally online! ACS is a week-long high school Conference Youth Ministry event for the North Carolina conference of the United Methodist Church. It's pretty much like the coolest conference youth event ever {said in a Napoleon voice of course}! If you aren't familiar with ACS, then these videos may not make any sense to you at all... but for the 425 of us who spent a week at Methodist College this past July, they rock! Without further verbiage from me, let's get on with the videos!

Hey Zack...
This year the Conference Youth Officers decided to do a daily video segment which we entitled In Your Face!!! A major highlight of the ACS Experience is the Wednesday night dance (think high-school gymnasium) and Monday is never too early to start planning for that big night. The theme of this first segment was "Pick Up Lines to use to get that special someone to dance with you," and was hosted by Treasurer Ben Cobb. Of course everything we do in these segments is tongue-in-cheek and we'd never advocate guys using these lines on other guys... it's just that all we had was Zack... :-) Actually, part of the deal was that a staff member was supposed to be "featured" in each video and Zack was the one chosen for this piece. Despite all of the great pick-ups, he just didn't bite. {Community Standards!} Just Kidding.

We shot this video in the Student Center cafe-lounge place on Monday night and showed it Tuesday morning.

First Entry...

Well I'm headed off to ACS this weekend, so I'm running around like crazy trying to get things ready! I set up this blog to host videos, so hopefully when I return, I'll have some snazzy videos to show ya...!
